A Show of Support for #YolandaPH Survivors with Canva

It has been weeks since; yet, the images of the devastation wrought by Typhoon Yolanda(Haiyan) remains with us. The picture of homes and livelihoods torn down, of villages and farmlands ruined, and of families hungry and in grieving will forever be etched in our minds.

We all know there is still a lot needed to be done. Even with the strength and resiliency shown by our fellow Filipinos in the aftermath of all these, the survivors still are in need of a continuous stream of support as they venture to rebuild what has been lost.

For my part, I sought out alternate avenues to try and provide support for the survivors. In my own way and by the use of my blog, the power of the internet, and the strong connections of social media, I was fortunate enough to come across one great opportunity to do so through the help of the generous people at Canva.

I always believe a Company that gives back will see prosperous years ahead. I know it will come for the kindhearted people of Canva. I am grateful for the opportunity they have given me in also being able to give back for a good cause. Their generous donation given on my behalf to the Charity of my choice is something I truly appreciate and will forever treasure.

It is my hope that by this simple contribution, the survivors will find not just relief but the strength to rise up again. May they know and feel, with help from their Filipino family and the rest of the International Community, they are not alone in the face of adversity.

About Canva
The Canva journey began back in 2007, while Melanie Perkins was studying at the University of Western Australia. Melanie was teaching students how to use programs like InDesign and Photoshop — programs that people found hard to learn, and harder to use.

After tossing around the idea for Fusion Books with co-founder Cliff Obrecht, the pair decided to take out a loan and bring in a great tech team to build their online tool for creating school yearbooks. They didn’t really know what they were in for but thankfully they learned a lot in those early days; how to sell, how to recruit great people, and how to build a business.

Five years later and Fusion Books is going strong. It’s now the largest school yearbook publisher in Australia and last year expanded into France and New Zealand. The pair always believed the technology had applications beyond the yearbook market, and knew they had to pursue their vision.

The only thing Melanie and Cliff needed now was a fantastic tech co-founder. They looked for a while before finally finding Cameron Adams; an ex-Google gun, who’d worked on Wave and a few other projects. He was someone who shared their vision and culture, and is now Canva’s Chief Product Officer.

Canva has a great team of people: top designers, developers, investors, and advisors. Canva people have often come from unexpected places. Some left their jobs. Others have left their own startups, or cut short around-the-world trips to join the team.

It’s been an incredible journey so far, and it’s only the beginning.
